Truth and Reconciliation asks something of all of us β including business owners.
Today, September 30, we pause for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
It is a day to remember the children who were taken from their families, the Survivors of residential schools, those who never returned home, and the families and communities who continue to carry the impacts of that history.
But remembrance is only one part of the work.
For those of us who own and lead businesses, I believe reconciliation also invites us to look inward and ask some difficult, meaningful questions:
How do we create workplaces where people feel respected, heard and valued?
How much do we understand about the history of the land and communities where we do business?
Are we making space to learn from Indigenous voices and perspectives?
And, perhaps most importantly, how can our businesses contribute to relationships built on respect, trust and reciprocity?
Reconciliation isn't something that happens in a single day β and it isn't something we can simply check off a list.
It is an ongoing commitment to learning. To listening. To acknowledging what has happened. To understanding how the past continues to shape the present. And to considering what each of us can do, in our own sphere of influence, to help build a more respectful future.
As business owners, we have an opportunity β and a responsibility β to think beyond transactions and profits and consider the kind of communities our businesses help create.
Today, may we take the time to listen before speaking, to learn before assuming, and to remember that meaningful reconciliation requires both truth and action.
𧑠Every Child Matters.
Today, we remember. Today, we learn. And tomorrow, we continue the work. ...
Thank you to all of the candidates who took the time to participate in our community forum and engage thoughtfully with questions from local residents.
A special thank you to everyone who submitted questions, attended the forum, listened, and took part in this important conversation. Your participation helps strengthen our community and contributes to an informed and engaged election.
Weβd also like to extend our sincere thanks to Unifor Local 88 for hosting the forum in partnership with the Chamber, and for providing thoughtful moderation throughout the evening. We appreciate the time and effort that went into creating an opportunity for candidates and citizens to connect and hear directly from one another. Special thanks also to Craig Todt for his production work on this video.
